Talensi District faces prolonged blackout following NEDCo standoff

The Talensi District in Ghana's Upper East Region has experienced a total blackout since Tuesday, August 25, following a standoff between local youth and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

The disruption began on Monday, August 24, when NEDCo attempted a disconnection exercise. Resistance from local youth led the company to disconnect the entire area, including the capital, Tongo, from the national grid. NEDCo officials stated the disconnection will remain in place until calm is restored and the underlying issues are addressed.

Residents report that the protest is not an attempt to avoid paying electricity bills, which they describe as a civic duty, but rather a response to persistent power outages that occur whenever it rains. These frequent blackouts have been reported to authorities previously without resolution. The ongoing lack of power has significantly impacted local businesses and general productivity across the district.
