Talgo proposes dual-gauge high-speed trains for Portugal
Spanish manufacturer Talgo is preparing a proposal for Comboios de Portugal (CP) to supply high-speed trains capable of operating on both Iberian and international rail gauges. While the current tender for the Lisbon-Porto high-speed connection specifically requires Iberian gauge compatibility, Talgo CEO Ricardo Chocarro stated that offering variable gauge technology provides Portugal with greater future flexibility.
This technology allows trains to transition between different track widths without stopping or requiring passengers to disembark. Talgo aims to position this capability as a strategic advantage should Portugal decide to adopt the European standard gauge or seek to operate in different international markets in the future.
Talgo is competing against the French company Alstom for the contract, which has a base value of approximately 504 million euros. The proposal must also account for the specific challenges of the Portuguese network, including the need to operate on various types of lines while high-speed infrastructure is still under construction.
