Talib Ahmed Bensouda named Coalition 2026 flagbearer

Talib Ahmed Bensouda, the Mayor of Kanifing and leader of the UNITE party, has been named the official flagbearer for the Coalition 2026 alliance. Bensouda will challenge incumbent President Adama Barrow in the presidential election scheduled for December 5.

Bensouda emerged as the sole candidate after a turbulent selection process involving several high-profile withdrawals. Rivals including Ambassador Essa Bokarr Sey and Professor Sidat Yaffa exited the contest, leaving Bensouda unopposed. The selection process followed earlier tensions and the withdrawal of the APP-Sobeyaa party led by Essa Faal.

In his acceptance speech, Bensouda emphasized unity and national service, stating, “I do not accept this as a prize. I accept it as a duty.” He pledged to focus on the coalition's memorandum of understanding, which includes commitments to constitutional reform, fighting corruption, and promoting national reconciliation. He also extended an invitation for parties that previously withdrew to rejoin the alliance.
