Taliban detain two UN employees in Herat, Afghanistan

The Taliban's General Directorate of Intelligence has detained two Afghan employees of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in the western city of Herat. The individuals were taken into custody on Sunday, August 9.

United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq confirmed the arrests, noting that the mission has not been informed of the specific charges against the staff members. Furthermore, UNAMA has been denied permission to visit the detainees. The UN has formally called on the de facto authorities to respect the legal privileges and immunities afforded to the organization and its representatives.

Human Rights Watch researcher Fereshta Abbasi warned that these detentions pose a serious threat to the UN's ability to deliver lifesaving humanitarian aid across Afghanistan. The incident occurs amid a worsening humanitarian crisis and ongoing tensions in the region.
