Taliban invites U.S. investment in Afghan minerals and infrastructure

Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi has invited the United States to reopen its embassy in Kabul and invest in Afghanistan’s infrastructure, including roads, dams, and mineral resources. Marking the fifth anniversary of the Taliban’s return to power, Muttaqi stated, “We consider the chapter of war to have come to an end, and from now on, we want relations based on mutual respect and a new chapter of positive engagement.”

Despite the invitation, the U.S. State Department has indicated that bilateral ties will not be normalized. Several obstacles remain, including the Taliban’s refusal to return U.S. arms and equipment left in the country and disputes regarding the detention of a dual Afghan-American citizen. Additionally, political tensions persist regarding the potential return of U.S. forces to Bagram Airbase.
