ATP Brussels tournament relocated mid-competition due to scheduling error
Organizers of the ATP 250 European Open in Brussels were forced to relocate the tournament mid-competition from the ING Arena to the Heysel exhibition center. The move, which occurred between Thursday and Friday, was necessitated by a scheduling error that required the original venue to be cleared for a series of concerts featuring artists such as PLK, Djadja & Dinaz, and Duran Duran.
The relocation was a massive logistical undertaking involving approximately 100 workers and 25 to 30 trucks to move offices, screens, and retail spaces overnight. To accommodate players, mobile homes were utilized as makeshift locker rooms. While the error increased the tournament budget by 10 to 15 percent, the move increased spectator capacity from 5,200 to 6,000 seats.
Some players expressed frustration regarding the change. Tallon Griekspoor complained to officials about the dimensions and speed of the new court, noting it felt significantly different from the original. However, other players, including Belgian Zizou Bergs, praised the unique setup. The tournament is scheduled to return to the ING Arena next year.
