Talvinder Atwal sentenced to 17 years for sexual offences

Talvinder Atwal, a 24-year-old from Briton Ferry, has been sentenced to an extended 17-year prison term following his conviction for multiple sexual offences. The charges included two counts of rape, assault by penetration, intentional strangulation, two counts of sexual assault, and engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour.

During the proceedings at Swansea Crown Court, Judge Catherine Richards classified Atwal as a dangerous offender, noting that he appeared to take pleasure in the victim's distress and held entrenched beliefs that posed a significant risk of reoffending. The sentence consists of 14 years in custody followed by a three-year licence period. Atwal must serve two-thirds of his custodial term before being eligible to apply for release, subject to Parole Board approval. He will remain a registered sex offender for life.

The victim provided a statement describing the profound impact of the abuse, noting that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and lives an isolated life as a result of the trauma.
