Tama Zoo in Tokyo reports death of three lionesses from heatstroke

Three female lions – Mugi (3 years), Ichigo (11 years) and Luena (15 years) – died at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park between July 28 and August 2, 2026. Necropsies showed severe dehydration and multi‑organ failure, leading the zoo to attribute the deaths to heatstroke caused by an unprecedented summer heatwave that pushed temperatures in parts of Japan above 40 °C.

Since mid‑July, ten of the park’s sixteen lions exhibited loss of appetite, lethargy and other heat‑related symptoms. The zoo closed the lion enclosure to visitors, provided water sprays, industrial fans, intravenous fluids and other cooling measures, and placed the surviving lions in a specially cooled holding area. The remaining lions continue to receive veterinary care.

Animal‑rights group PETA condemned the incident, stating, “This tragedy is a stark reminder that zoos can never provide wild animals the control and freedom they need to protect themselves.” The heatwave has also strained public health, with thousands of heatstroke‑related hospitalisations and dozens of deaths across Japan.
