Tamaiti Williams begins recovery after spinal superbug infection
All Blacks prop Tamaiti Williams is beginning a progressive recovery after a severe battle with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The infection targeted his spine, specifically affecting a disc, and led to multiple hospitalizations over a four-month period.
Williams revealed that the infection was so destructive he compared it to a tree burning from the inside out. The severity of the condition resulted in him nearly suffering sepsis twice and facing the possibility of permanent paralysis. To stabilize his spine, surgeons had to perform a procedure to fuse his T12 and L1 vertebrae using four screws.
Currently, Williams is working with the Crusaders’ medical team. He is limited to walking and remains on oral antibiotics until mid-October. While there is no definitive date for his return to professional rugby, he is undergoing a phased training block to monitor his progress through upcoming scans.
