Tamandua rescued from residential backyard in Niterói
A tamandua was rescued from a residential backyard in the Itacoatiara neighborhood of Niterói on Wednesday. Following the report, the Integrated Public Security Center (Cisp) dispatched the Environmental Guard to manage the animal.
The animal was successfully relocated to a forested area in Engenho do Mato, specifically within the Caminho de Darwin. Local authorities noted that the animal appeared to be in good condition, allowing for its release into the wild.
The incident highlights the frequent interaction between wildlife and urbanized areas in Niterói, particularly in the Oceanic Region where residential neighborhoods border fragments of the Atlantic Forest and conservation units like the Serra da Tiririca State Park. Authorities advise residents to maintain distance from wild animals and contact emergency services rather than attempting to remove them personally.
