Tamaulipas agriculture faces sorghum decline and livestock modernization
The agricultural and livestock sectors in Tamaulipas are facing significant shifts due to climate challenges and modernization efforts. A historic decline in sorghum production is expected, with yields projected at only 800,000 tons due to insufficient rainfall, prompting the state to promote alternative crops like guar and wheat.
Despite drought conditions, maize production remains stable, particularly in northern municipalities supported by irrigation systems. Meanwhile, the livestock sector is focusing on industrialization and genetic improvement. The state has allocated 21 million pesos for a genetic improvement program, offering subsidies for high-quality bovine and caprine semen to enhance herd productivity.
However, sanitary concerns persist. Authorities have warned against the illegal movement of cattle infected with screwworm larvae, emphasizing that recent administrative relaxations do not permit the transport of infected animals. Additionally, the state is managing labor market adjustments through the National Employment Service to connect workers with new opportunities in the industrial and commercial sectors.
