Tamaulipas allows students to stay home for World Cup 2026 opening match

The government of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas announced that on Thursday, 11 June 2026, students in basic and middle‑level education may remain at home to watch the inaugural match of the FIFA World Cup 2026. The day off will not be recorded as an absence and will not affect academic standing. All schools will stay open for families who choose to attend, and the Secretariat of Education will ask teachers to provide assignments for students who stay home to ensure continuity of learning.

Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya endorsed the measure, emphasizing national pride and the cultural significance of the tournament, which will be co‑hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The exemption applies only to the June 11 match day, with regular school activities resuming the following day.
