Tamaulipas authorities report arrests in extortion crackdown
Security officials in Tamaulipas have reported the arrest of between 15 and 20 high-value targets linked to extortion and 'cobro de piso' networks. The operations, conducted by state and federal agencies, have taken place in several municipalities, including Matamoros, Reynosa, Ciudad Victoria, El Mante, and the southern zone comprising Tampico and Altamira.
Willy Zúñiga Castillo, executive secretary of the State Public Security System, attributed these results to coordinated intelligence, surveillance, and the use of video monitoring. He emphasized that collaboration with the business sector and citizen reports are essential for identifying suspects and verifying complaints.
Separately, the state's Secretary of Public Security, Carlos Arturo Pancardo Escudero, noted that Tamaulipas ranked ninth in Mexico for the lowest crime incidence in September. He reported that rates for vehicle theft and home burglaries reached their lowest levels since 2015, and that extortion rates remain below the national average.
