Heavy rains spur warnings and $105 million repairs for sinkholes in Tamaulipas, Mexico

State Protection Civil officials warned that intense rains will persist across northern, central and southern Tamaulipas, urging residents to avoid crossing rivers, streams and flooded areas. The forecasts predict heavy precipitation through early next week, with the risk of rising river levels and sudden water surges. One fatality was reported in Ciudad Victoria when a person was swept away while attempting to cross a swollen watercourse.

The Tamaulipas government and water utility Comapa Sur announced a joint investment of 105 million pesos to address the chronic sinkhole problem exacerbated by the recent drought and the return of heavy rains. Officials said 80 % of historic sinkholes have been repaired, but the rainy season could trigger more than 230 new collapses. In the past three and a half years, 526 sinkhole cases have been recorded, and 37 new ones were reported in the first half of the year. The funding aims to rehabilitate affected zones, improve drainage infrastructure and restore road surfaces in over a thousand neighborhoods.
