Tamaulipas Education Officials Warn Against School Fees, Probe Exclusion

The Secretaría de Educación de Tamaulipas (SET) announced it will monitor that voluntary contributions requested at the start of the school year are not made mandatory, reiterating that public education is a right and schools cannot condition enrollment, attendance, or participation on payment. Secretary Miguel Ángel Valdez García emphasized that contributions are voluntary per law and any discrimination for non‑payment is unacceptable.

SET is investigating a complaint from a parent in Matamoros alleging a primary‑school student was excluded for not paying such a contribution. The department said the director and supervisor will be summoned to clarify; the case has conflicting accounts. If violations are confirmed, officials will be reprimanded.

In related government action, the State Commission for Victims (CEAV) awarded “Esperanza de Tamaulipas” scholarships to students of various levels, underscoring the state’s commitment to ensure education access for victims of crime and to promote inclusive, humanistic education under Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya.
