Tamaulipas electoral process begins for 2026-2027 elections
The Instituto Electoral de Tamaulipas (IETAM) has formally launched the 2026-2027 electoral process, which will determine 471 elected positions, including 43 municipal presidencies and the renewal of the State Congress. During the opening ceremony, IETAM President Juan José Ramos Charre emphasized that the institution will act as an impartial arbiter, ensuring equal rules for all participants without favoring specific political projects or candidates.
Ramos Charre stated that while the institute is open to dialogue, the law is non-negotiable and the organization will defend its autonomy. He called on political actors to treat opponents with respect rather than as enemies to avoid social confrontation during the 265-day process leading up to the June 6, 2027, elections.
However, the launch faces criticism from the PRI. State leader Bruno Díaz Lara warned of risks to democratic certainty, accusing the Morena party of weakening institutions. Díaz highlighted concerns regarding incomplete electoral bodies, vacant magistracies in the State Electoral Tribunal, and insufficient budget allocations for IETAM.
