Tamaulipas faces electrical instability and illegal connections

The state of Tamaulipas is facing significant electrical challenges, including frequent power outages and a high prevalence of illegal connections. In the municipalities of Ciudad Victoria, Reynosa, and Matamoros, officials have detected a high concentration of unauthorized electrical connections, locally known as “diablitos”.

Walter Julián Ángel Jiménez, Secretary of Energy Development, warned that these irregular connections pose serious fire risks due to the Joule effect, where overloaded conductors overheat and can ignite, potentially damaging transformers and affecting neighboring homes. These connections are being used for high-demand equipment, such as lathes, in both irregular settlements and established neighborhoods.

Simultaneously, local deputy Claudio de Leija Hinojosa has called on the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) to address frequent power interruptions in southern Tamaulipas. De Leija reported approximately 36 outages, noting that these failures jeopardize essential services, including hospital operations and water supply systems.
