Federal judge Agustín Archundia Ortiz of Jalisco granted the first amparo against Mexico’s 2024 judicial reform, ruling it unconstitutional for violating the original 1917 Constitution, breaching human‑rights standards and containing procedural defects. The reform, passed by Congress, would have introduced popular elections for judges and reshaped the Federal Judicial Power.

The amparo was signed on 31 July 2026 and will be notified on 17 August 2026; it has no immediate effect. The decision will first be reviewed by a collegial court in Jalisco and may ultimately be taken to the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation. The ruling protects the interests of magistrates Mercedes Verónica Sánchez Miguez, Manuel Ernesto Saloma Vera and Aidée Sánchez Arévalo, who had challenged the reform.
