Tamaulipas Government Launches Conservation Plan for Historic Mercado Pedro J. Argüelles

The government of the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, led by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, announced a coordinated effort to preserve the historic Mercado Pedro J. Argüelles in Ciudad Victoria. Through the Instituto Tamaulipeco de Vivienda y Urbanismo (ITAVU), Secretary of Urban Development and Environment Karl Heinz Becker Hernández and ITAVU director Germán Fernández Guzmán convened a meeting with merchants and market tenants. Participants included Secretary General Jeu Martínez, tenant representative Fernando Tovar, treasurer Juan Pineda and spokesperson Arturo Hernández. The initiative aims to improve the market’s facilities, strengthen its economic role for dozens of families, and protect its 19th‑century architectural heritage. Families such as the Tovar, Romero‑Salazar, Briones and Flores‑Eguía were recognized for their long‑standing contribution to the market’s vitality. Officials emphasized ongoing collaboration between state agencies and local merchants to ensure the market’s continued cultural and commercial significance.
