Tamaulipas governor launches permanent emergency command center for weather disasters

Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya and National Civil Protection Coordinator Laura Velázquez Alzúa inaugurated a permanent Interinstitutional Command Post in Tamaulipas during an extraordinary session of the State Civil Protection Council. The facility will coordinate responses to hurricanes, cyclones and extreme rain, and will allow alerts to be sent directly to mobile phones, similar to Mexico’s earthquake warnings.

A recent drill on 6 May tested the system, while the National Risk Atlas shows 28 municipalities in the state classified as very high risk and 12 as high risk. Ciudad Madero faces the greatest flood danger, hosting many of the 101 critical flood points identified. The state has invested in equipment, vehicles, monitoring systems and personnel to reinforce operational capacity, aligning the effort with President Claudia Sheinbaum’s national civil‑protection strategy. State cabinet members, the rector of the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas and local officials attended the ceremony, underscoring the collaborative approach to prevention and emergency response.
