Tijuana disarmament program destroys over 88,000 weapons

In Tijuana, a voluntary disarmament strategy has resulted in the destruction of 88,319 weapons and artifacts this year. Miguel Torruco Garza, subsecretary of Violence Prevention for the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection, reported that the items were surrendered anonymously by citizens in exchange for cash incentives.

The surrendered inventory includes 60 short firearms, 125 long firearms, 35,025 cartridges, 398 magazines, one fragmentation grenade, and 52,710 detonating capsules. A total of 4,486,353 pesos has been distributed to participants through this program.

Local officials, including Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, emphasized that the initiative is part of a national security strategy to address the root causes of violence and rebuild social fabric by removing firearms from homes and streets.
