Tamaulipas lawmakers propose permanent 'Operation Mochila' school safety checks

The Congress of Tamaulipas is considering a proposal to make the "Operation Mochila" program permanent in the state’s schools. The measure would allow the State Secretariat of Education to conduct backpack inspections directly when local School Safety Committees are absent or inactive.

Deputy Yuriria Iturbe Vázquez, chair of the Education Commission, emphasized that regular backpack checks are essential for protecting children and adolescents, stating, "This practice must be recurrent to ensure safety in schools." The proposal also aims to strengthen overall school discipline and reinforce the rights of students, while ensuring teachers can maintain orderly classrooms amid growing concerns about violence and safety in educational institutions.
