Tamaulipas manages federal funding cuts and potential tax increases

The state of Tamaulipas is navigating fiscal challenges involving both federal transfers and proposed local tax adjustments. According to data from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP), federal participations in Mexico decreased by 1.8 percent in real terms during the first eight months of 2026. Despite this national trend, Tamaulipas has not been among the entities facing the most significant reductions.

The 2026 Revenue Law for Tamaulipas anticipates a total of approximately 69.2 billion pesos from federal participations and contributions. For the state's 43 municipalities, the estimated annual allocation is 13.5 billion pesos, which is essential for covering public services, payroll, and operational expenses. The General Participation Fund is expected to hold the largest portion of these municipal resources.

Simultaneously, the Tamaulipas Congress is reviewing proposals from four municipalities to increase cadastral values. Matamoros and Nuevo Laredo have requested 5 percent adjustments, while Reynosa and Díaz Ordaz are seeking increases of up to 10 percent. The Finance Commission is currently conducting a technical and legislative review of these requests, with a decision expected within one to two weeks.
