Tamaulipas, Mexico sees record deportations and stricter passport checks at the US border
Mexican authorities in Tamaulipas are tightening border controls as migrants face new passport verification requirements. At the Nuevo Laredo crossing, officials warn that any foreign visitor with an expired passport may be delayed, subjected to additional scrutiny, or denied entry. Travelers are urged to ensure their documents are current before attempting to cross.
In the same period, Matamoros recorded a historic surge in deportations, with 15,844 people returned to Mexico between January and April 2026 – a 238% increase over the previous year and the highest level ever reported for the city. By contrast, Nuevo Laredo and Reynosa saw fewer than 1,000 deportations each, and shelters in the region are now housing only 121 migrants, down from tens of thousands in recent years. Officials attribute the shift to stricter U.S. immigration and security measures that have curbed irregular crossings.
The combined enforcement actions illustrate a broader decline in migrant flow through Tamaulipas, while emphasizing the importance of up‑to‑date documentation for those who continue to travel across the border.
