Américo Villarreal Santiago accused of 110 million‑peso extortion

Israel Alejandro Valdez Sánchez, a businessman from Tamaulipas, posted a video alleging that Américo Villarreal Santiago – the son of Governor Américo Villarreal – demanded a payment of about 110 million pesos to keep a state contract for distributing welfare food parcels. The contract, awarded to Valdez’s firm in March 2023, was later cancelled after the company allegedly failed to provide required guarantee policies.

Valdez says he refused to pay the demanded “moche,” after which he faced retaliation: eight months of house arrest, cancellation of contracts, legal actions, financial pressure and threats to his life and family. He claims to have video, audio and document evidence supporting his accusations and has called for federal authorities and human‑rights bodies to intervene.

The governor’s legal adviser, Marco Antonio García Barrientos, denied the extortion claim, stating the matter has been under legal review for years, that the businessman is not under house arrest, and that investigations into alleged falsification of guarantee documents are ongoing. A tribunal initially ordered the state to pay Valdez roughly 500 million pesos, a decision later reversed, and subsequent rulings have favored the state. The case has attracted public attention, with some politicians expressing support for Valdez, while the governor’s office has not issued an official response.
