Tamaulipas prosecutors pursue justice for 2021 Camargo migrant massacre

The Tamaulipas State Attorney General's Office is continuing investigations into the 2021 Camargo massacre, in which 19 migrants—including 16 Guatemalans, one Salvadoran, and two Mexicans—were killed. State Attorney General Jesús Eduardo Govea Orozco confirmed that arrest warrants remain active for former public servants involved in the incident.

Of the approximately 12 former agents from the now-defunct Special Operations Group (GOPES) implicated in the killings, at least 10 are currently being prosecuted. Authorities are still working to locate one or two fugitives to face criminal proceedings. The GOPES unit was established during the administration of former Governor Francisco Javier García Cabeza de Vaca.

Investigations revealed that agents intercepted the victims, fired upon their vehicles, killed survivors, and attempted to destroy evidence by incinerating bodies with gasoline. The prosecution is investigating whether the attack resulted from a case of mistaken identity involving organized crime or direct collusion between the elite unit and criminal groups. The Attorney General noted that GOPES had faced numerous allegations of human rights violations and extrajudicial executions.
