Tamaulipas ramps up security and records 58% rise in deportations
Starting on 16 July, the Tamaulipas state guard will add more personnel and patrols to strengthen surveillance in Tampico’s main tourist attractions and neighbourhoods that have requested increased police presence. The operation, announced by the state’s public‑security secretary and coordinated with the navy, army, national guard and municipal authorities, also includes continued monitoring at city access points, especially the border with Veracruz, and heightened patrols in commercial zones such as the Manuel Ávila Camacho market.
In the first five months of 2026, the state’s migrant‑return office reported a 58 % jump in deportations, reaching 15,458 cases. Nearly 90 % of these returns were processed in Matamoros, making it the primary reception point for migrants sent back from the United States. By contrast, deportations in Nuevo Laredo fell sharply, dropping 90.2 % to just 450 cases. The surge follows a rise from 9,759 deportations during the same period in 2025, indicating a significant shift in border‑area migration dynamics.
