Tamaulipas Teachers Get Salary Boost as Historic Pension Debt Nears Full Repayment

On 30 June 2026 the Tamaulipas Secretariat of Education disbursed a retroactive salary increase to 48,293 state and federal education workers, an outlay of 277 million pesos that will be reflected in July paychecks. The payment follows the increase announced in May by President Claudia Sheinbaum and Governor Américo Villarreal, who have been highlighted for improving teachers’ conditions.

Separately, the State Retirement Savings System for Education Workers (SARTET) is set to settle its long‑standing debt of roughly 707 million pesos by November 2026. The debt, stemming from missing contributions in 2011‑12, is already 88 % paid, with over 500 million pesos contributed by the current administration. officials say the settlement will restore confidence in the pension fund and stabilize its finances.

Union leader Arnulfo Rodríguez Treviño reiterated the teachers’ union’s independence, stating, “Nadie me va a comprar, nadie me va a decir que entregue los votos. Lo que pertenece al maestro es del maestro y no se vende.”
