Sonora resumes cattle exports to the United States FAST-MOVING
Mexico has officially resumed the export of live cattle to the United States, starting from the Agua Prieta, Sonora border crossing. The resumption, announced by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo on August 24, 2026, follows more than a year of trade restrictions caused by the presence of the screwworm (gusano barrenador).
Initial shipments are set at 750 heads per day, with plans to gradually increase the volume to between 1,300 and 1,500 animals daily. To ensure sanitary safety, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) will implement a strict traceability system from birth to delivery. Additional measures include the dispersion of sterile flies to combat the pest in Sonora and Chihuahua, and the establishment of security and sanitary controls within a 200-kilometer perimeter.
While Sonora is the first northern state to reopen, other regions are preparing for subsequent phases. Tamaulipas is seeking to reactivate its exports through Coahuila or Nuevo León, and Coahuila is working to enable the Acuña-Del Río crossing. The prolonged closure of the border has resulted in significant economic losses for the Mexican livestock sector, estimated by the Mexican Meat Council to be between 2.4 and 3 billion dollars.
