Tamaulipas sees drop in active cattle worm cases

The number of active cases of the cattle worm (gusano barrenador) in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas fell to 81, down from 104 reported earlier. The outbreak now affects 14 municipalities, a reduction from a peak of 32, with many municipalities reporting only a single case. The decline moved Tamaulipas from the top five states with the most cases to the tenth position nationwide, according to the National Service for Health, Safety and Agro-Food Quality (SENASICA).

State officials highlighted the role of a new sterile‑fly production plant in Metapa, Chiapas, which can release up to 100 million sterile flies per week. The sterile‑fly technique is expected to bolster ongoing surveillance and control measures and support the eventual eradication of the pest.
