Tamaulipas teachers' union chief accused of pursuing federal deputy seat for immunity

Miguel Ángel Tovar Tapia, president of the State Society of Teachers and Parents in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, publicly accused Arnulfo Rodríguez Treviño, the current head of Section 30 of the SNTE teachers' union, of seeking a federal plurinominal deputy seat as a way to obtain parliamentary immunity. He said, “Que no mienta Arnulfo, lo que busca es una protección a través de un fuero, posiblemente con una diputación plurinominal dentro de la segunda circunscripción.”

Tovar also alleged that Rodríguez’s private secretary, Ulises Ruiz, is facing a pending criminal case for gender‑based violence and is allegedly pressuring victims to drop complaints. He called for a transparent, fraud‑free internal election, recalling a previous case where a union official was forced to choose between a union post and a legislative seat after a federal tribunal ruling.
