Tamedia to cut 34 full-time positions amid media market transformation

Tamedia, Switzerland’s largest private media company, has announced plans to cut 34 full-time positions, affecting a total of 41 employees. The reductions will impact newsrooms in Zurich, Bern, Basel, Lausanne, and Geneva, with 30 full-time roles being removed from journalism and 4 from the print desk.

The company attributed the decision to a fundamental shift in the media market, noting that advertising revenue is increasingly flowing toward global platforms. As part of a broader transformation, Tamedia intends to reorganize editorial functions by bundling tasks, automating processes, and increasing the use of AI and data to create value for paying readers.

CEO Jessica Peppel-Schulz described the cuts as a “difficult consequence” and stated that the company aims for a “social and respectful” process. Affected employees will be informed by the end of October, and a social plan involving further training and early retirement options will be implemented. The news has drawn sharp criticism from the union syndicom and the professional association impressum.
