Tamil drama 'Members of the Problematic Family' opens Indian Film Festival of Melbourne

The Tamil-language drama *Members of the Problematic Family* will make its Australian premiere as the opening night film of the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM). The festival runs from August 13 to 23, with the opening screening scheduled for August 14 at Hoyts District Docklands.

The film, which debuted at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, follows the death of a young man named Prabha and the ensuing 16‑day mourning ritual that brings his mother, uncle and cousins together, exposing long‑standing family tensions. Director R. Gowtham and lead actor Karuththadayan will attend the event. The movie is also competing in the IFFM Awards jury competition for Best Indie Film and Best Director.

IFFM, billed as the largest Indian‑cinema showcase in the Southern Hemisphere, will feature a slate of films, conversations and cultural programming spanning India’s many languages and regional traditions.
