Tamil Nadu Assembly leaders flag rising essential commodity prices
Opposition leaders in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, including Udhayanidhi Stalin of the DMK and Edappadi K Palaniswami of the AIADMK, have raised urgent concerns regarding the sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities.
Udhayanidhi Stalin moved a calling attention motion, noting that prices for items such as rice, oil, pulses, and sugar have increased significantly over the last six months. He cited specific examples, stating that the price of onions rose from Rs 40 per kg in May to Rs 80, and toor dal increased from approximately Rs 120–150 to as high as Rs 180. He called for a special consultative meeting involving the Chief Minister and the Food Minister to develop a strategy to control inflation.
In response, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Venkataramanan attributed the price hikes, in part, to rising fuel costs following the Iran war. He stated that the government is monitoring 41 commodities daily through a committee led by the Chief Minister and pledged to intervene as necessary through ration shops and other distribution channels to protect consumers.
