Tamil Nadu Assembly live telecasts spark debate over expunged remarks

The Tamil Nadu Assembly’s decision to telecast its proceedings live has raised questions regarding the effectiveness of expunging remarks in the era of social media. While live broadcasts aim to increase transparency and accountability, they also make it difficult to remove controversial statements from the public eye.

Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin raised the issue in the Assembly, noting that even when the Speaker expunges remarks, portions of the debate are often converted into ‘reels’ and circulated on social media. In response, Speaker J C D Prabhakar stated that the DMK has filed a notice regarding a privilege issue over the circulation of such content. He assured the House that any reported circulation of expunged remarks would be referred to the Privileges Committee.

Historically, expunction was used to maintain the dignity of the House by removing defamatory or unparliamentary language from the official legislative record. However, the digital age presents a challenge where the official record may be corrected, but the content remains accessible in the public domain through live television and social media platforms.
