Tamil Nadu Assembly passes OBC census resolution and announces tax reforms

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly addressed several key administrative and social issues. Regarding social justice, a unanimous resolution was passed urging the central government to record Other Backward Classes (OBC) data in the 2027 census using specific caste names as listed in state and central government lists, to ensure proper representation in education and employment.

Minister Lokesh Tamil Selvan announced significant reforms for the taxation and registration departments. These include a new portal to resolve GST and tax issues, a revised sales tax threshold increasing from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1 crore, and the use of API technology to prevent fraudulent property and inheritance document registrations. Additionally, IIT Madras will be appointed to enhance the efficiency and security of the registration department.

In environmental matters, the Supreme Court of India has postponed the hearing regarding the removal of encroachments in the Meghamalai Tiger Reserve and surrounding protected forest areas to September 22. The case involves discussions on providing alternative arrangements for residents in Manjolai.

Furthermore, PMK member Sowmya Anbumani called for the regularization of contract workers in state transport corporations and requested improved facilities for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees living in the state's camps.
