Tamil Nadu by-elections see lower turnout in Madurantakam and Dharapuram

By-elections were held in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu on October 6. The polls were necessitated by the resignations of former AIADMK MLAs Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama, who subsequently joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

Voter turnout in both constituencies saw a decline compared to the general Assembly elections held in April. Madurantakam recorded approximately 86.26% turnout, down from 93.22%, while Dharapuram recorded approximately 80.31%, a decrease from 89.89%. The elections featured a multi-cornered contest involving the TVK, DMK, AIADMK, NTK, and Left parties.

During the polling process, several issues were reported, including technical glitches with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and allegations from the DMK regarding the distribution of money and goods by TVK candidates. TVK candidate Sathyabama dismissed a viral video claiming she spent 31 crore rupees on election expenses, calling it fabricated. Counting of votes is scheduled for October 9.
