Tamil Nadu to hold Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections on October 6
The Election Commission has announced by-elections for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu, scheduled for October 6. The nomination process begins on September 9 and will conclude on September 16, with vote counting set for October 9.
These vacancies were created following the resignation of AIADMK legislators who joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. The upcoming elections serve as a significant political test for the TVK-led state government. In Dharapuram, a reserved constituency, the election marks the first by-election for the seat since 1967.
In a separate development, the Tamil Nadu government is set to present a commission's final report in the state assembly regarding the Kallakurichi methanol poisoning tragedy. The report, led by retired judge B. Gokuldas, investigates the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 67 people caused by contaminated illicit liquor and will include recommendations for strengthening enforcement and regulating methanol supply chains.
