Tamil Nadu by-elections show AIADMK decline and DMK resilience
Recent by-election results in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies have signaled a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. The AIADMK experienced a sharp decline in its traditional voter base, falling to third place in both seats. In Dharapuram, a former stronghold for the party, the AIADMK's vote share dropped from 40.56 percent in the April Assembly elections to 25.08 percent. Madurantakam saw a similar decline of 9.34 percent.
In contrast, the DMK demonstrated electoral resilience by maintaining its core support. Despite contesting the by-elections without its traditional heavyweight allies, the DMK finished second in both constituencies. In Madurantakam, the party's vote share dipped by only 1.1 percent, while in Dharapuram, it saw a decrease of less than 0.5 percent.
The rise of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by C Joseph Vijay, has disrupted existing party dynamics. Following the defection of several AIADMK MLAs to the TVK, the party secured victories in both by-elections, positioning itself as a dominant force in the region.
