Tamil Nadu scraps Parandur airport project, seeks alternative site
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced the cancellation of the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project. The decision follows years of protests from local residents and environmentalists concerned about the impact on agricultural lands, water bodies, and local livelihoods.
The state government is now searching for an alternative site for a second international airport near Chennai, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) tasked with conducting feasibility studies. To address immediate aviation needs, the government plans to expand the existing Meenambakkam airport, aiming to increase its capacity to 55 million passengers annually through new terminal upgrades.
Regarding the land already acquired for the Parandur project, officials stated there are no plans to return it or reverse compensation. Instead, the government is considering using the approximately 1,700 acres for industrial purposes, such as agro-processing units or a SIPCOT industrial estate. The decision has sparked political debate in the state assembly, with opposition members questioning the economic impact of the cancellation while the ruling party maintains that protecting farmers' interests was paramount.
