Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against Lok Sabha delimitation

The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed a resolution opposing the proposed delimitation of Lok Sabha constituencies. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved the resolution, which seeks to permanently freeze the total number of Lok Sabha members at 543 and maintain the current inter-state allocation of seats.

The state argues that any redistribution of seats based on population data recorded after the 1971 Census would unfairly disadvantage southern states like Tamil Nadu, which have successfully implemented population control programs and achieved significant socio-economic growth. The resolution also calls for maintaining the current 2.2:1 ratio between population and states.

A key component of the resolution is the demand for the immediate implementation of the 33% reservation for women in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, based on the existing 543 constituencies, rather than linking it to future census or delimitation exercises.

The move has seen broad support from opposition parties like the DMK, with Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin emphasizing the need to protect the state's political representation. While the BJP has expressed opposition to the resolution, arguing that delimitation is necessary for increased public representation, other leaders have voiced support for protecting federalism and state autonomy.
