Tamil Nadu CM Vijay announces LPG and bus travel welfare schemes

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has announced two major welfare initiatives in the state assembly to provide economic relief to citizens.

The ‘Annapoorani Super Six’ scheme will provide reimbursement for three LPG cylinders annually to eligible families. The program, which is expected to benefit approximately 1.30 crore families, targets households with an annual income below Rs 2.5 lakh, small and marginal farmers, and persons with disabilities. The reimbursement will be processed via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to the bank accounts of female heads of households following official billing from oil marketing companies. The scheme is scheduled to commence during the Pongal festival in January 2027, with an estimated annual budgetary outlay of Rs 4,000 crore.

Additionally, the ‘Vettri Payanam’ bus travel scheme is being expanded. Starting October 2, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, the scheme will extend free travel benefits to transgender individuals. For women, the scope of free travel will broaden to include Express, Limited Stop Service (LSS), and Deluxe buses, in addition to existing services. This expansion is estimated to cost the state exchequer approximately Rs 6,000 crore annually.
