Tamil Nadu CM Vijay inspects Puzhal prison to review inmate welfare
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay conducted a surprise inspection of the Puzhal Central Prison to review inmate welfare, security, and administrative functions. During the visit, Vijay inspected various facilities, including medical centers, kitchens, vocational training units, and classrooms at the Mahatma Gandhi Community College.
Addressing the need for reform, the Chief Minister emphasized that prison authorities should prioritize rehabilitation through education, skill development, and vocational training. He specifically reviewed products made by inmates, such as iron racks and paper covers, and inspected tailoring and power loom units.
The inspection also addressed serious administrative concerns. Vijay reviewed allegations involving bribery, the unauthorized use of mobile phones, and the circulation of narcotics within the facility. He also examined security measures to prevent drug smuggling and investigated reports regarding inmate safety and deaths in custody.
In addition to the prison visit, the Chief Minister inspected the M3 Puzhal police station. Recent government actions related to the prison department include the sanctioning of additional body-worn cameras for personnel and the introduction of a new stitching allowance for staff.
