Tamil Nadu CM Vijay launches gold ring scheme for newborns

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay launched the ‘Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram’ (Maternal Uncle Gold Ring) scheme at Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai on September 28, 2026. The initiative provides a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring to eligible newborns born in government hospitals and primary health centres across the state.

The scheme, which fulfills a key electoral promise from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, is being implemented retrospectively for babies born from June 22, 2026. The state government has allocated approximately Rs 755.83 crore annually for the program. To ensure transparency, each ring features a unique serial number and is provided in tamper-proof packaging.

Officials stated the program aims to encourage institutional deliveries, celebrate childbirth, and bolster public confidence in the state’s healthcare infrastructure. By utilizing the cultural symbolism of the maternal uncle providing gifts, the government hopes to incentivize families to choose public medical facilities over private ones.

The initiative has faced criticism from the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with officials suggesting that essential nutrition should be a higher priority for families than gold rings. Additionally, some critics have noted the scheme reinforces patriarchal norms through its naming and cultural framing.
