Tamil Nadu Congress leaders debate PM candidacy for 2029

Internal disagreements have surfaced within the Tamil Nadu Congress regarding its alliance with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the selection of a Prime Ministerial candidate for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

Former Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai has argued that the party should only maintain alliances with groups that explicitly support Rahul Gandhi for the Prime Minister position. This stance follows speculation from some TVK leaders regarding Vijay as a potential national political figure for the 2029 elections.

In response, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Praveen Chakravarty defended the strength of the Congress-TVK alliance and maintained that Rahul Gandhi remains the party leader. The dispute highlights growing tensions over national leadership roles and the future direction of political partnerships in the region.
