Tamil Nadu DMK MLA G.V. Markandayan Granted Conditional Bail Over Remarks Against Chief Minister Vijay
The Madras High Court on August 3 granted conditional bail to DMK legislator G. V. Markandayan, who had been arrested on July 20 for allegedly making threatening remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a party meeting in Kovilpatti. The court ordered Markandayan to give an undertaking not to repeat such statements and allowed him exemption from daily police appearances on days when the state assembly is in session.
Markandayan was held in Palayamkottai Central Prison pending the bail hearing. After his release on August 4, he accused the state government of an “authoritarian mindset” and compared his detention to historic imprisonments of DMK leaders. He also criticised recent law‑and‑order issues in the state, including crimes and farmer water shortages.
