Tamil Nadu election disputes: Chidambaram addresses voter deletions as court upholds one-vote win
In the aftermath of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, political and legal challenges regarding election integrity continue. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram dismissed claims that alleged voter name deletions were the primary cause for the TVK victory or the DMK defeat. While acknowledging that the removal of names was incorrect, he stated that the opposition must prove the scale of manipulation and noted it was not apparent that deletions alone determined the outcome.
Chidambaram also addressed the nationwide controversy involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. He indicated that the INDIA bloc would decide on further actions, such as approaching the Supreme Court or seeking a removal resolution in Parliament, during upcoming meetings if the CEC does not resign. This follows reports of internal disagreements within the Election Commission regarding electoral-roll revisions and voter data access.
Separately, the Madras High Court dismissed a petition filed by DMK leader KR Periyakaruppan challenging the election of TVK MLA R Seenivasa Sethupathi in the Tiruppattur constituency. Sethupathi won by a single vote, with 83,375 votes against Periyakaruppan’s 83,374. The court ruled that the petition lacked sufficient material facts to prove that alleged irregularities, such as postal ballot discrepancies, materially affected the election result.
