Tamil Nadu electricity bill surge sparks political criticism

The Tamil Nadu government announced that up to 200 units of electricity would be provided free of charge, but many households have reported bills that are up to four times higher than the usual rate. Opposition leader Seeman condemned the increase, accusing the DMK‑led administration of misleading voters after promising free electricity.

Electricity Minister C. D. R. Nirmal Kumar responded to accusations made by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin and DMK leader Stalin, stating that the claim of 3.70 lakh families filing complaints is inaccurate. He cited official data showing that last year 11.5 lakh consumers received bills more than three times the norm, while this year the figure is 9.6 lakh, with only about 2 lakh seeing a reduction. Nirmal Kumar said investigations into meter delays and faulty equipment are underway and promised corrective action to prevent further over‑billing.
