Tamil Nadu Enforces Strict ID Checks to Ban Alcohol for Under‑21s

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered all licensed clubs (FL2) and hotels (FL3) to verify age proof before serving alcohol, prohibiting any sale or service of liquor to persons under 21. Staff must ask for documentary proof whenever a customer's age is doubtful, and clubs must issue membership identity cards to ensure only eligible members and their guests receive alcohol. The Excise Department also reminded establishments to adhere to prescribed operating hours and to keep non‑drinking activities such as cultural and sporting programs active. Violations may attract legal action under the Tamil Nadu Liquor (Licence and Permit) Rules, 1981, as part of the state's broader effort to promote a drug‑free and socially responsible environment.
