Tamil Nadu engineering admissions see decline in student enrollment

Engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu have seen a decline in participation following the second round of the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) 2026 process. The number of students joining BE and B Tech courses has dropped by 4.45 percentage points compared to the same stage last year.

Data indicates a significant disparity in seat occupancy. While 88,930 students secured seats through the first two rounds, approximately 106,583 seats remain vacant, meaning only about 41 per cent of total engineering seats have been filled. While prominent government and private institutions have high occupancy, 167 colleges filled less than ten per cent of their seats, and 23 colleges reported no admissions at all.

The trend suggests a selective preference rather than a total decline in interest in the field. Students are heavily concentrating on well-established institutions and specific branches, particularly Computer Science Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), and Information Technology (IT). Most seats in the four Anna University campus colleges have been filled.

Choice filling for the third round of counselling is currently underway, with eligibility for students holding a general rank between 1,31,094 and 2,33,812. Supplementary counselling registration is also open for students who cleared Class 12 through supplementary exams or missed the regular process.
